Every Pinch About Himalayan Pink Rock Salt

Himalayan Salt deposits are the remnant of a salt lagoon that evaporated some 800 million years ago during the formative Precambrian era, 5000 feet below the Himalayan Mountain Ranges. The area where the salt mines now exist was once an ancient inland sea that gradually evaporated and left expansive mineral salt deposits behind. Under tremendous pressure, the ancient sea beds got covered with lava, which acted as a natural shield preventing toxins and pollutants. Protected beneath enormous mountains for decades, this pink rock salt remained untouched for ages, making it the purest salt on earth. The benefits of pink salt are seen when one consumes it for a long duration, due to the presence of 84+ trace minerals in it.

Discoveries are a complicated topic. While some occur with the rigorous hard work & planned efforts, some are completely unexpected and surprising. The same is the case with the Himalayan Pink Rock Salt. Somewhere around the 326BC, Alexander marched towards India. The pink salt mines were discovered by the army of Alexander the Great. Horses from his cavalry started licking the stones along the Jhelum River and that’s when the soldiers realized that these rocks aren’t just rocks! However, despite the discovery, nothing changed much. Centuries later, the Mughal Emperor Akbar initiated commercialized salt mining.

Himalayan Pink Rock Salt is harvested from Khewra Salt Mine, the second-largest mine in the world, situated in Jhelum District. It is also known as Mayo Salt Mine, in honour of Lord Mayo, who visited it when he was the Viceroy of India, during the British Era. Britishers are enterprising & they never leave any opportunity that can be turned into a successful business. Dr H. Warth, a British mining engineer designed the primary tunnel in the Khewra mines. Formally established in the 1820s, this mine is spread across a 25-mile long tunnel, across 18 working levels. Currently, Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation holds operational control of the salt mines. It is also an attractive tourist destination, drawing nearly 300000 visitors each year. It also houses unique salt carvings of popular monuments such as a miniature replica of the Eiffel Tower, the Great Wall of China as well as a small mosque and a bridge.

During the British Rule, the room-and-pillar mining technique of excavation was employed to carry out mining. Under this method, deliberate planning ensured that half of the mineral deposit remained undisturbed in the form of pillars so that the ceilings don’t fall off and the workers are safe. Only 50% of the salt in each “room” within the mine is excavated. The remaining 50% was left as pillars for supporting the structure. After this, the mining of Pink Rock Salt was done entirely by hand using traditional methods. Even today, mining is carried out traditionally. Machinery is deployed at the stage where the salt rocks have to be broken into pieces or rendered into a particular shape.

Due to multiple applications, the advantages of this healthy salt are also many! Apart from being used as a replacement for regular salt, Himalayan pink rock salt can also be used as a preservative for meat, fishes, etc. One can also use a heated Himalayan salt slab as a grill or a cooled slab for serving.

For witnessing the benefits quicker, sole water can be consumed. Sole water is water saturated with pink Himalayan Salt. All it takes to make sole water is water in a container or a jar (preferably glass) combined with Himalayan salt until it is saturated. Once saturated, take a spoonful of sole water with a glass of normal water and drink it first thing in the morning. Although the research to support the benefits of sole water is scarce, there is only one way to know.

Beyond the kitchen, Himalayan Rock Salt Lamps also find their place in household, offices, spa centres, etc. They aid better sleep, boost serotonin, reduce coughing and help ease respiratory issues like asthma by purifying the air. They are known to create calming and balanced energy by emitting negative ions which balance the positive ions released by electronic appliances. There is a logic behind this, water follows wherever salt goes. The lamps attract water vapour and along with that, dust and mould get sucked like in a lint trap.

Good for the kitchen, good for the rooms, what next?

The benefits of pink salt extend beyond the kitchen as well.
Mix Himalayan pink salt powder with water and enjoy a relaxing bath soak that soothes your stiff muscles. Combine Himalayan rock salt powder with any essential oil of your choice and use it as a bath scrub to rub off dead skin and exfoliate for visibly smooth skin.

Big switches seem like mountains at first but eventually, everyone grows into them. It is the little changes that are often ignored by most of us in sheer oversight. Interestingly, over a period of time, these tiny changes can bring tectonic benefits. Such is the case with replacing your daily salt– insignificantly significant. Your regular table salt has the same chemical composition as Himalayan pink salt. But here’s a glance at the additional benefits- it comes without any anti-caking agents or any free flow additives which means adulteration of harmful substances is nil. It has no added minerals and all the 84 trace minerals present in Himalayan pink rock salt are inherent. The best part is, it is free from chemical anticaking agents.
